Is a Yorkie Right for Me? 🐾
Yorkies are amazing little dogs with big personalities—but they aren’t for everyone. Like all breeds, they come with quirks, challenges, and unique needs. Before welcoming one into your family, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons.
✅ Pros of Owning a Yorkie
Loveable & Affectionate – lap dogs who adore snuggles and attention.
Smart – quick learners with big personalities.
Independent – while they love attention, they also enjoy time exploring on their own.
Long Lifespan – many Yorkies live 14–16 years with proper care.
Inexpensive to Feed – only about 1 cup of food per day.
Good with Children – with proper supervision and gentle handling.
Great Companions – devoted, loyal, and full of spunky charm.
⚠️ Cons of Owning a Yorkie
Difficult to Fully Housetrain – many use potty pads with varying success.
Loves to Bark – especially at noises, strangers, or “intruders.”
Require Regular Grooming – every 4–6 weeks plus at-home maintenance.
Stubborn – can be independent and strong-willed.
Big Dog Attitude – they may challenge larger dogs (and win!).
Potential Health Issues – genetic concerns are common, which is why responsible breeders must health test.
A Personal Note 🐶💕
Yorkies have stolen my heart. I grew up with a Yorkie named Mille, who bossed around our 165 lb St. Bernard—proving that these little dogs really do have big dog attitudes in tiny bodies!
Today, our Yorkies Gabby and Cindy keep life interesting:
Gabby loves to cuddle, sleeps with us every night, and alerts us when someone’s around.
Cindy? She barks at every little noise and… let’s just say potty training is still a work in progress. She sleeps in her exercise pen at night so the bed stays clean. 😅
Even our cats get in on the fun—Raven is the bossiest cat in the house and the only one who “fights like cats and dogs” with the Yorkies. Everyone else? They cuddle together in harmony.
These are the realities of Yorkie life—equal parts laughter, love, and sass.
The Bottom Line
Yorkies are spunky, lovable companions with quirks that make them who they are. If you can embrace the barking, the stubbornness, and the potty training challenges—you’ll gain a loyal, entertaining, and deeply affectionate little dog who will fill your life with joy for many years.
That’s why I am so passionate about health testing. While Yorkies can face health issues, I work hard to produce the healthiest, happiest puppies possible—so families get the very best start.
